The Mountains of Mourne
"Where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea" — Percy French's famous lyric captures something essential about this remarkable landscape. The Mournes don't rise from a plateau; they surge upward from sea level, twelve granite peaks exceeding 2,000 feet, dominating the landscape of County Down with a drama that belies their modest heights.
For C.S. Lewis, who grew up in Belfast gazing at these peaks across the Lough, the Mournes were fundamental to his imaginative development. He described them as a "magic vision" that shaped his vision of other worlds. Many scholars believe these mountains directly inspired the landscapes of Narnia—and walking among them, it's easy to understand why.
Slieve Donard: The Highest Peak
At 850 meters (2,790 feet), Slieve Donard is Northern Ireland's highest mountain. The most popular route begins in Newcastle, following the Glen River through Donard Forest before emerging onto open moorland for the final ascent. The climb is challenging but non-technical—expect 4-5 hours round trip and be prepared for weather changes.
From the summit, on clear days, you can see the Isle of Man, Wales, Scotland, and most of Ireland. A stone tower marks the top—one of many structures built when the Mourne Survey of the 1820s mapped these peaks with remarkable accuracy.
The Mourne Wall
One of Ireland's most remarkable engineering achievements, the Mourne Wall runs 22 miles around the catchment area supplying Belfast's water. Built between 1904 and 1922 by local stonemasons, it traverses 15 summits, with sections climbing impossibly steep slopes. Walking the entire wall is a serious undertaking (10-12 hours), but shorter sections can be accessed at various points.
Beyond Donard
The Mournes offer walks for all abilities. Silent Valley reservoir provides gentle lakeside strolls with mountain backdrops. Tollymore Forest Park (another Game of Thrones location) offers woodland walks beneath the mountain wall. For experienced hillwalkers, traversing the range or tackling the Mourne Seven Sevens (seven peaks over 700m in one day) provides serious challenges.
