Hillsborough: Royal Village, Georgian Elegance
Just fifteen minutes from Belfast, Hillsborough feels like another world—a perfectly preserved Georgian village centered on a tree-lined square, anchored by a castle that serves as the official residence of the Royal Family when in Northern Ireland. The pace is slower here, the streets prettier, and the afternoon tea rather more civilized.
Hillsborough Castle and Gardens
Hillsborough Castle has played a significant role in Irish and British history. It was here that the Anglo-Irish Agreement was signed in 1985, and the castle continues to host important political events. More recently, it opened to public tours, revealing stunning State Rooms, the throne used during Royal visits, and extensive gardens open throughout the year.
The gardens themselves—covering 100 acres—blend formal parterre planting with woodland walks, a walled garden, and the Lady Alice's Temple overlooking the lake. They're beautiful year-round but particularly spectacular during spring bulb season.
The Village
Hillsborough's Main Street curves elegantly around the square, lined with Georgian buildings housing independent shops, art galleries, cafes, and restaurants. The Plough Inn has served visitors since 1755. The Parson's Nose and First Floor restaurants have established Hillsborough as a dining destination.
The Parish Church of St. Malachy, visible from across the square, dates to 1774 and features a tower modeled on St. Sepulchre's in London. The courthouse, now an information center, and the Market House complete the Georgian ensemble.
Fort and Forest
Hillsborough Fort, just below the castle, is an artillery fortification built in the 1650s—remarkably intact and free to visit. The surrounding Hillsborough Forest offers peaceful walks through mature woodland, connecting the village with surrounding countryside.
