Welcome to Derry/Londonderry

Derry-Londonderry, known affectionately as the Maiden City, stands as one of Europe's finest examples of a walled city. With walls that have remained intact for over 400 years, this is a place where history isn't just preserved in museums—it's written on every street corner, every mural, and every stone of the ancient ramparts that still encircle the historic center.

As your guide, I've walked these walls hundreds of times, and they still move me. The views across the River Foyle, the stories embedded in every bastion and gate, the way the modern Peace Bridge now connects communities that were once divided—Derry tells the story of Northern Ireland's complex past and hopeful future in ways that textbooks simply cannot capture.

The Historic City Walls

Derry's walls are unique in Ireland and Britain—they've never been breached in siege, earning the city its "Maiden" nickname. Built between 1613 and 1619, these 1.5km of ramparts offer an elevated walkway around the entire old city, providing visitors with an unparalleled perspective on four centuries of urban development.

Walking the walls takes approximately 30-45 minutes, but I'd recommend allowing at least 90 minutes to fully appreciate the experience. Key points include the four original gates—Bishop's Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Shipquay Gate, and Butcher Gate—each with its own architectural character and historical significance.

The Bogside and Political Murals

The Bogside neighborhood, situated just outside the western walls, contains some of the most significant political murals in Ireland. The People's Gallery murals, painted by the Bogside Artists between 1997 and 2008, document key moments from the Troubles with raw emotional power.

These twelve murals tell stories that range from the civil rights movement to Bloody Sunday, from internment to the peace process. They're not just art—they're historical documents painted on gable walls, each one carefully researched and deeply personal to the community.

The Peace Bridge and Riverfront

The Peace Bridge, opened in 2011, is more than just a stunning piece of architecture—it's a physical symbol of reconciliation. This elegant S-curved footbridge connects the predominantly Protestant Waterside with the predominantly Catholic Cityside, a journey that takes just minutes but symbolically bridges decades of division.

The riverfront area has been beautifully developed, with Ebrington Square on the east bank now hosting events, markets, and cultural activities throughout the year. The views back toward the walled city from here are spectacular, particularly at sunset.

Guildhall and Diamond

The Guildhall, with its stunning stained glass windows depicting the city's history, anchors the waterfront area. The building houses a free exhibition that traces Derry's story from plantation times to the present. The interior is genuinely impressive—the stained glass alone justifies a visit.

The Diamond, the central square within the walls, serves as the city's heart. Surrounded by characterful buildings and overlooked by the War Memorial, it's the perfect place to begin exploring the old city's network of narrow streets.

Cultural Renaissance

Derry's designation as UK City of Culture in 2013 catalyzed a remarkable transformation. The creative industries have flourished, music venues have multiplied, and there's a confidence about the city that's palpable. The Halloween Festival, now internationally renowned as one of the world's best, brings hundreds of thousands of visitors each October.
